Technology Trends - 2022

5G

5G refers to the fifth-generation mobile technology defined based on multiple factors such as  superior data communication rates between wireless local area networks (WLAN) reaching speeds up to 1.5 GBps and cover a distance of 90 meters.  5G networks are predicted to have more than 1.7 billion subscribers worldwide by 2025, according to the GSM Association, with more low-power, low-latency connected devices.  5G networks will cover 40% of the world by 2024, handling 25% of all mobile traffic data.

Users will have faster downloads, reduction of buffering, and an enhanced and enriched virtual experience. 5G will enable services that rely on advanced technologies like AR and VR.  It will be used in factories, in HD cameras to help improve safety and traffic management, in smart grid control, and smart retail.  5G use cases will go beyond the consumer. It will ensure seamless transmission of a large quantities of data for businesses. Further, it will help in establishing smooth connectivity between the digital world and the physical world creating the next layer of the programmable world which will be experiential. Building on data collected by IoT and edge devices and processed at 5G speeds, digital twins are a core constituent of this layer. The digital models of the physical world will give businesses real-time insight into their environments and operations.  This digital twin market was valued at $3.21 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $184.5 billion by 2030.
