Technology Trends - 2022

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is known for image and speech recognition, navigation apps, smartphone personal assistants, and ride-sharing apps.  AI applications include advanced web search engines, recommendation systems, understanding human speech, self-driving cars, and automated decision-making.  One of the key trends in the AI world is machine vision.  Computers that can see and recognize objects on a video or photograph.  Language processing is making advances such that machines can understand our voices and speak back.

Artificial IntelligenceThe global artificial intelligence market is currently valued at $327.5 billion and continues to grow with the influx of investments.  The global spending on cognitive and AI systems is expected to exceed $57 billion in 2022.  New jobs will be created in development, programming, testing, support and maintenance.

Artificial Intelligence

AI will become more pervasive through the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, automobiles, household appliances as well as navigation, health care and other areas of research.  AI is increasingly used to diagnose health problems utilizing smart-watch data, to enhance digital maps by analyzing satellite images, and to drive vehicles with limited human interaction.  Given these advances, there will be increased emphasis on data security and privacy, digital ethics, and the need to address inherent biases in AI models, according to Barr von Oehsen, Associate Vice President of Office of Advanced Research Computing.

Low-code or no-code will also be a significant trend.  AI models will be built using drag-and-drop graphical interfaces decreasing the requirement for coding skills.  Yet, according to the Pew Research Center, the current educational structures aren't ready for the effects of AI on employment in 2030 and beyond.  Learning institutions are not preparing today's students for the future. To cope with future automation in the coming decades, we need to educational institutions need to equip students with the right knowledge and skills.
