Overview of the Digital / Business Analytics Concentration

Business disruptors of the past leveraged technology to re-write the rules of business. Today, innovations from generated insights created from volumes of available data are disrupting business as usual. Given the tremendous volume of data firms are inundated with and the desire to use this data to gain competitive advantage, this concentration addresses the exploding digital / business analytic skills gap by providing context-relevant learning experiences for students focused on developing actionable insight generation competences and enhanced skills.

It has been reported that the United States is facing a shortage of talented individuals possessing digital / business analytical skills required by firms to generate insights into the vast stores of structured and unstructured data. This digital / business analytics concentration highlights the key competences of 1) data management, 2) decision-making support, 3) qualitative and quantitative analysis, 4) applied technology, and 5) mobile delivery competencies that trained professionals must possess.

Yet, the inability to acquire talented individuals is acting as a barrier for firms trying to incorporate digital / business analytics into their processes. Key to successfully addressing this challenge is the requirement to integrate active, skills-based “learning-by-doing” in our curriculum model via hands-on assignments, course projects, and certifications as gaining competence requires both trial-and-error and experimentation.

Instead of just teaching analytics as a mere tool, this concentration educates students with context relevant digital / business analytics concepts that can be utilized for effective decision-making. It combines a unique set of technical and analytical skills along with business acumen providing an in-demand curriculum model.
