Decision points: future-proofing, improving skill sets, & adapting to changing times
Dual Major
While traditionally management has been a favored pick for dual majors for many years, the reason to choose Information Systems Management (ISM) for a dual major is that the impact that the age of silicon has brought forth has been instrumental to the success of companies and improvement in private life. As we become more and more integrated with technology, the impact of paying attention and handling the issues technology causes with managing people. The three main decision points that arrive are future-proofing, improving skill sets, and adapting to changing times.
Decision points: future-proofing, improving skill sets, & adapting to changing times
I chose ISM as my dual major primarily based on the idea that technology is everywhere. It is in our homes, in our houses, and even in our pockets. With smartphones, smart appliances, and smart cars, the new white-collared worker must adapt to these changes. A degree in information system management teaches individuals the abilities needed to properly handle large-scale databases and apply that data to problems effectively. Again the constant struggle to climb the ladder in the corporate world is different from what it was decades ago, with employers favoring skill and certifications to simple experience as with the increase in technology in the corporate world, its only natural to learn about it before it could crush anyone.
The improvement in skills includes a wide range of sites and software from understanding the basics and intermediate levels of cybersecurity and identifying and preventing attacks. Along with basic coding skills and understanding how to repair basic systems, ISM has dramatically improved my ability with technology and understanding what and how to fix many of my issues, allowing me to not always depend on IT for help—increasing the likelihood of avoiding any problems that can occur. ISM helped round out my skillset and increase my ability to stay relevant in a changing environment.
Finally, we face the most critical aspect of ISM and its difference from a degree in management as with management, the focus of the training is managing the individuals, not with the application of deadlines with modern technology as the degree is taught with only a focus on how to manage groups instead of working with larger-scale businesses we have already seen the rise of issues with the changes with the use of zoom for corporate use as some managers refuse to allow employees to stay home once the state regulations where lifted as were both technologically challenged and unable to apply the basics of management from afar. Again, we saw through studies and reports that remote jobs are just as productive and have a higher level of worker satisfaction. As remote working allows employees to save on gas general traveling expenses and improves diet, the worker is no longer forced to travel into a high-density environment and compete with traffic.
The review of the reasons to pick ISM is to increase computer skills, ensure a well-rounded future without considerable risk of falling behind younger employees and finally in an age of remote employees and a changing balance in work and life, the future is inevitable that information systems management is an outstanding balance.
